The nominations narrow the field of Oscar hopefuls, the climax of the Hollywood awards season, whose 93rd edition was postponed to April 25 due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Beijing-born Zhao is the first non-white female nominated as a director, while Aaron Sorkin (Chicago Trial of the 7) had to settle for a nomination for best adapted screenplay after being dropped from the category against artists like Fincher. and Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round).
Oscar contenders meet two weeks after Golden Globes criticized for failing to nominate films with black casts, but the Academy awarded six nominations for the civil rights drama “Judas and the Black Messiah,” including Best Picture and Best Picture. Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield.

Before the announcement of the nominations, the president of the Academy, David Rubin, confirmed that the Oscars would be transmitted from the historic Union Station in Los Angeles, as well as from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, its traditional headquarters.
Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband, pop star Nick Jonas, later read the list of nominees on a live broadcast from London.
Even so, the most outstanding films on the platforms will have to surpass Nomadland, which won the main trophies at the Venice and Toronto festivals, and has swept the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, the critics’ awards.
An intimate and contemplative road movie, Chloe Zhao’s film was produced by Searchlight, a Disney subsidiary that was already behind the Oscar successes of The Shape of Water and Birdman.

Zhao is the first woman to receive four nominations in a single year: for Directing, Editing, Original Screenplay and as Producer in the Best Picture category.
Contagion director Steven Soderbergh will produce this pandemic-stricken edition, which will have a record number of potential candidates (366) after the Academy decided to admit more streaming titles and movies released in early 2021.
